How Acupuncture and Pregnancy Go Together

Almost ready for labor!
Almost ready for labor!

Pregnancy is often a very joyous occasion, but we all know that it’s not without trials and tribulations for most of the 9 months it encompasses and then for the postpartum recovery period as well.  Due to the changes in hormone levels, the growth of another human being in your body and all the other physiologic changes the occur during pregnancy, there are some less than desirable symptoms that are quite common.

There are often many types of therapies and treatments for pregnancy-related symptoms, but during this time in life, women must be extra careful about what goes into her body due to the impact on the baby.  The good news is acupuncture can treat mostly all pregnancy-related symptoms in a drug-free, no side-effect way!

Common Symptoms Acupuncture Can Treat During Pregnancy:

  • Nausea/vomiting (morning sickness, hyperemesis gravidarum)
  • Back pain/pelvic pain/sciatica
  • Insomnia
  • Depression/anxiety/irritability
  • Leg cramps
  • Hemorrhoids/constipation
  • Urinary retention
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Swelling and edema
  • Pregnancy-related hypertension
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Varicose veins
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Preterm labor
  • Miscarriage threat
  • Regulate blood sugar
  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Birth preparation throughout the last 4 weeks of pregnancy
  • Ensure optimal health throughout pregnancy
  • Treat preexisting conditions
  • Ensure proper positioning of the baby

Birth Preparation:

Women generally come in once per week during the last four weeks of their pregnancy.  We work to relax the mother’s mind as well as relax the ligaments to prepare for the baby.  The following are benefits for the mother and baby:

  • A healthy and energized mom
  • On time cervical effacement and dilation
  • Reported shorter and less painful labors
  • Decreased chances of being overdue (the baby will come when ready – acupuncture does not promote early deliveries)
  • Reduction in medical interventions and complications

Out-calls are available for pre-birth acupuncture near the time of delivery, for bed-rest patients and for post-partum recovery acupuncture treatments.  Call for information (308-631-0087).
